Bespoke flagship takes 400 hours of hand-craftsmanship

For the 2017 model year, Bentley has revealed not one, but three new luxury flagships. In addition to the ‘standard’ Mulsanne (hardly the right word for such a bespoke creation) there’s the sportier Mulsanne Speed and a new Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase (see separate web pages). All benefit from a fresh new look, new infotainment technology and subtle chassis revisions to maintain the Mulsanne’s pre-eminence at the pinnacle of luxury.

There’s no mistaking the new look Mulsanne: the 2017 model is dramatically revised from the windscreen forward. Most striking feature is a wide, vertical vaned grille in stainless steel that recalls some of the great models from the marque’s heritage (among them W.O. Bentley’s masterpiece, the 8 Litre). The adaptive LED headlights are new, as are the bumpers, bonnet, radiator shell and wings. The effect is purposeful and striking, with a single-unit flush bumper giving a sleek, low and planted look. The rear lights adopt the Bentley B design that made its debut in the Bentayga, and the new Mulsanne also carries stainless steel Bentley B wing vents.

Inside, there’s a new touchscreen infotainment system with a 60GB solid-state hard drive, state-of-the-art blind spot assist and a telephone upgrade to 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot for a better user experience. Each of the two rear-seat passengers has a 10.4" touch screen tablet for their information, communication and entertainment. The interior features redesigned seats, new door trims and armrests with a vast choice of veneers and 24 hide colours, though Bentley can also match paintwork or hide to any colour a customer cares to specify.

Bentley Mulsanne

Under the skin the Mulsanne now has a new suspension set up for more ride quality refinement at low speeds and improved bump absorption. There are new subframe bushes for better insulation against road noise and harshness, and new active engine mounts to isolate vibration from the mighty 6 ¾ litre V8. Power and torque outputs for the Mulsanne remain at 505 bhp (512 PS) at 4,200 rpm and 1,020 Nm (752 lbs.ft) of torque, though in the unlikely event that you’d want even more power there’s the option of the 530bhp Mulsanne Speed to consider.

The Bentley V8 engine can trace its lineage back to the S Series some 50+ years ago, though like the ‘grandfather’s axe’ of legend not one component remains from the original. Advanced technologies such as cylinder de-activation and variable cam phasing, together with an 8-speed automatic transmission, ensure the engine meets the most stringent legislation while still providing that effortless tide of power that’s at the core of the Mulsanne’s appeal.
