Launched in 2015, the Bentley Bentayga was Bentley’s first-ever SUV, initially introduced as a concept in 2012, sparking anticipation among journalists and enthusiasts alike. Its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show was met with instant success, quickly establishing it as one of Bentley’s most popular and fastest-selling models.
The Bentayga brought a new standard of comfort and luxury to the SUV market, embodying Bentley’s signature elegance with a versatile, go-anywhere, do-anything spirit that has redefined luxury driving experiences.
Naturally the Bentayga was equipped with the classic 600hp W12 engine and naturally was a true four wheel drive. Bentley initially only intended to build 3,500 units overall for 2016 but these were all sold and claimed well in advance and forced Bentley to increase allocation to to over 5,500, of these the “First Edition” spec was limited to just 608 units.
The 6 litre W12 was the first of a new generation of engine technology from Bentley that meant the engine could adjust the amount of active cylinders as needed, with up to 6 being deactivated as required.
This new W12 delivered 600hp propelling the 2.4 metric ton vehicle to 60mph in just 4 seconds and all the way to 187mph.
The first generation of Bentayga came with the W12, but in 2017 was made available with a V8 Diesel, this was the first and to date only time that Bentley has offered a diesel model in its line up. The 430hp twin-turbo 4 litre was still very capable and offered a 0-60 of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. The Diesel model ceased production in 2020.
The V8 petrol was introduced in 2018, the 542hp 4 litre twin-turbo allowed a 4.4 second 0-60 and a top speed 180mph.
Added to the line up in 2018 after being announced at the Geneva Motor Show with deliveries starting 2019, The Hybrid paired a 3 Litre V6 turbo petrol with an electric motor for a total output of 443hp. The lithium-ion battery could sustain a range of 31 miles.
In June 2020 the the first “facelift” for the Bentayga was released, this was a significant update to the model, with the Bentayga now featuring updated LED lights, enlarged rear spoiler, new side vents and the number plate was repositioned to the rear bumper.
Internally saw a new infotainment system that now included Android Auto, Apple Car Play and smart phone charging.
Following the release of the updated 2020 facelift edition, Bentley announced the arrival of a number of key new models to the line up. Firstly the dynamic and sporty S model which has a more aggressive look with 22 inch wheels, larger rear spoiler and sports exhaust.
The Mulliner, as always, offers the greatest range of bespoke options and coach building, whilst the Azure spec offers everyday comfort and luxury.
The EWB, Extended Wheelbase, offers significantly greater rear passenger room and the luxury of limousine travel in an SUV, the EWB is available in standard and Azure trims level
Advertised as the most powerful Bentayga they have ever built, the Speed powered by the W12 engine it truly lives up to that claim, delivering 626hp and 900nm of torque it will get to 60 in just 3.8 seconds and offers a top of speed of 190mph.
