The Hennessey Blackbird is the third hypercar from Hennessey Special Vehicles, and the most radical departure yet. Where Venom GT chased records and Venom F5 chased outright speed, Blackbird is built around the quality of the connection between driver, machine and road: natural aspiration, a six-speed gated manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and a cockpit with no screens at all.
Inspired by the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, it is designed as an authentic alternative to the increasingly digitised, hybridised hypercars of today – a car built for beauty, emotion and long-distance driving enjoyment as much as outright performance. Limited to just 71 examples worldwide and designed and built in Texas, the Blackbird is priced from $2.5 million before taxes, with customer production targeted for 2029-2030.
Blackbird’s exterior design takes its cues directly from the aircraft that inspired its name. A long stance, disciplined surfacing and a crisp body-side chine line echo the SR-71’s tightly pinched fuselage, giving the car a clear thread between aerospace inspiration and automotive sculpture.
Active vertical rear stabilisers – which deploy automatically at 71mph and sit at ±71 degrees in a nod to the aircraft’s designation – provide the most distinctive visual link to the Blackbird’s namesake, while also serving a genuine aerodynamic function.
Further motorsport and aerospace details reinforce the theme, including a diamond-shaped quad exhaust inspired by the record-breaking Bell X-1, Formula One-style side pods and LMP1-inspired winglets, all wrapped around a design intended to remain as desirable in fifty years as it is today.
Inside, the Blackbird follows an analog-first philosophy, deliberately rejecting the screen-led complexity found in most modern hypercars. There is no infotainment display, no digital instrumentation and no steering wheel buttons; instead, a large central tachometer takes pride of place, reflecting the emotional and technical importance of engine speed in a high-revving, naturally aspirated hypercar.
The exposed shift linkage of the six-speed gated manual, a physical ignition key and simplified analog controls keep the focus firmly on the act of driving, while connectivity is handled discreetly through a bespoke device holster rather than a conventional touchscreen. Aviation-inspired details continue the story throughout the cabin, including a dash-mounted whiskey compass, while adaptive suspension, generous luggage space and thoughtful cabin storage support the Blackbird’s touring ambitions without compromising its analog character.
At the heart of the Blackbird is an all-new, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 developed with Ilmor Engineering, targeting 800-850hp and more than 9,000rpm – on course to be the highest-revving, most powerful naturally aspirated road-car V8 in the world.
With no turbochargers and no hybrid assistance, the engine is engineered purely for immediate throttle response, linear power delivery and a direct connection to the rear wheels, enabling a 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 220mph.
A bespoke full-carbon tub and carbon-fibre bodywork keep weight below 1,360kg, while adaptive suspension, traction control, ABS and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres complete a package built to be as rewarding on a long touring drive as it is at the limit.
