Continental Supersports COUPÉ AND CONVERTIBLE

Most powerful w12 bentley ever is world's fastest Four-Seater

When Bentley’s first-generation Continental GT made its debut in 2003, its W12 engine developed an impressive 552bhp, giving a top speed close to 200mph. That gives a little perspective to the new Supersports, which produces a massive 700bhp and reaches 209mph.

While it is both the fastest accelerating and fastest outright Bentley ever, the Supersports is no stripped-out track special; it’s as luxurious and refined as a Bentley ought to be.

Overview

Bentley Continental Supersports

The Supersports name made its debut in 1925 on a highly-tuned Bentley 3 Litre capable of a genuine 100mph. Just eighteen examples were built; the name was revised in 2009 with the 200+mph Continental Supersports, which earned its place in automotive history when ex-rally champ Juha Kankkunen set a new world ice speed record at the wheel. So the new model has quite a heritage to live up to, and prospective owners won’t be disappointed.

Visually, this is one very special Bentley. The new front bumper includes a carbon-fibre splitter, while the rear features an aerodynamic diffuser; a more extreme aero front splitter and rear spoiler is optionally available for the coupé. Brightware is gloss black, and covers front grille, rear bumper, door handles and window surrounds, while the headlamps and rear lights are dark tinted. Side sill extension and bonnet vents are finished in carbon fibre, the front wing vents are gloss black and so are the rifled exhaust pipe finishers. Supersports badging and 21" wheels in gloss black with machined surfaces complete the dramatic, performance-focused look.

Inside, owners have Bentley’s full palette of hide colours, veneers and technical finishes to choose from, as well as the option of chequered Supersports fascia panels in carbon fibre. Among the colour options, Bentley offers a tri-tone hide colour split, a design that’s unique to this model. Seats and door panels feature diamond-quilted Alcantara; the same material can be found on the new Supersports steering wheel and gearshift. As a finishing touch, embroidered Supersports emblems adorn the seat headrests.

Technology

Bentley Continental Supersports

At the heart of the new Supersports, Bentley’s W12 engine sets new benchmarks in both power and torque. Maximum power is 700bhp while torque is 1,017Nm; compared with the previous-generation Supersports, that’s a 10% increase in power to weight and a full 25% in torque to weight ratio. Acceleration from 0-60mph takes just 3.4 seconds while top speed is 209mph.

The additional power is achieved by new, higher-capacity turbochargers and a new charge-air cooling system; new main and conrod bearings ensure the new engine can comfortably and reliably handle all that extra power. A new torque converter locks up more rapidly for faster acceleration and to make full use of the immense torque. An optional titanium exhaust system saves a further 5kg – and sounds even better than the standard system.

Bentley’s engineers haven’t simply boosted the power and torque of the new Supersports, they’ve also borrowed torque vectoring technology from the race-derived GT3-R to achieve eager, agile handling that belies the car’s size and heft. This applies brakes individually during cornering, improving agility on turn-in and when accelerating out of corners.

Correctly deducing that Supersports owners will enjoy exercising all that extra power, Bentley’s stability control calibration is less intrusive on this model. Suspension is also lowered and stiffened to enhance the driver experience, but the Supersports is still every inch a Bentley grand tourer, capable of covering immense distances at speed and in comfort.
