Performance is a state of mind, not an achievement. Even Lamborghini’s iconic Miura, which gave the world the term ‘supercar’ in 1966, would struggle to hold off a 2017 hot hatch. That’s why Sant’Agata never stops looking for that extra edge – and why the new Huracán Performante is its sharpest V10 weapon yet.
Take one Lamborghini Huracán. Boost power. Reduce weight. Add active aerodynamics. Blitz the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife production car record, covering the 20.6 kilometres in just 6:52.01 min.
Sounds simple. But simple isn’t the same as easy. To create such a single-minded machine demanded radical re-engineering, from the Performante’s forged composite components to the naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre V10.
Lamborghini is a pioneer in forged carbon fibre composites and its use for the front and rear spoiler, bonnet, bumper and rear diffuser contribute to a 40kg weight reduction over the standard Huracán LP 610-4. All forged composites on the Performante are unpainted, on the reasoning that owners will want to see (and display) the pure material. Body colours are matt and a special matt orange finish has been special created for the Performante. Narvi 20" forged rims in bronze are unique to the Performante, though you can have centre-lock Loge rims as an option.
From the front, the Performante looks positively shark-like. Grille-free open intakes house active spoilers which are set for maximum downforce until the vehicle’s control system detects full-throttle, straight line acceleration, at which point they open, like an F1 DRS system. These are linked by software to two ducts in the engine cover. When they’re closed, the rear wing delivers maximum downforce; when open, they direct air below the wing, cutting drag. Cleverly, the two sides of the rear operate independently, loading downforce on the inside rear wheel when cornering. The electro-actuated flaps can deploy in just 500 milliseconds; Lamborghini calls this technology Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva, or ALA for short.
