Back in March 2017, a Lamborghini Huracán Performante coupé smashed the production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 6’52.01". That’s a convincing demonstration of the active aero and dramatic weight reduction of the Huracán Performante, and now it’s available with the heightened sense of drama, sound and speed that only an open top car can provide: the Huracán Performante Spyder.

Traditionally, removing the roof on a car takes away some of the rigidity, which can only be restored at the expense of extra weight. But Lamborghini doesn’t follow tradition, and the gap between its coupés and convertibles has been narrowed to the point where only pro racing drivers could detect a difference. It’s down to the company’s knowhow in advanced forged composites, which has enabled Sant’Agata to create a highly rigid yet lightweight bodyshell for the Performante Spyder that opens up a glorious view of the sky for the fortunate owner and passenger.

Like the coupé, the Performante Spyder features forged composite carbon fibre in the front and rear spoiler, engine cover, rear bumper and aerodynamic diffuser. Together, these contribute a weight saving of 35kg compared with the Huracán Spyder. Also like the coupé, it features Lamborghini’s Active Aerodynamics (ALA). This varies the aero downforce according to conditions, delivering maximum downforce in corners and under braking, while reducing drag on the straights or when accelerating. More than this, it even varies the downforce from one side to the other in corners, increasing both agility and stability. Matching the specification of the coupé, the Spyder also features revised suspension, steering and ESC programme settings for the ultimate in track performance, while remaining civilised enough for road driving.

The roof opens or closes in 17 seconds, stowing away beneath the rear deck with its distinctive rear fins, and can do so at speeds of up to 30mph. The fins, which are mounted behind each of the seats, have an integrated duct to reduce cockpit turbulence. Two removable wind guards damp lateral aerodynamic pulses and allow conversation between driver and passenger, even at high speeds.

The 5.2-litre V10 naturally-aspirated engine of the Performante Spyder produces 640hp at a heady 8,000 rpm, and a maximum torque of 600Nm at 6,000rpm. Yet with 70% of that torque available from as low as 1,600rom, it’s a civilised and tractable performer in traffic as well as utterly mind-blowing out on the open road. Permanent four-wheel drive, and a front/rear weight distribution of 43/57 delivers exceptional traction for a 0-62mph time of just 3.1 seconds, snapping at the heels of the Performante coupé. Top speed is identical at 202mph. If you plan on attempting the Nürburgring lap record, you might still go for the coupé, but you’d be missing out on the Spyder’s heightened sensory emotion and the sonic drama of a Lamborghini V10 engine note in the open air. It’s a nice dilemma to have…
