Ferrari’s newest grand tourer now has four-wheel steering as well as four-wheel drive.

When Ferrari gives a model a new name, there’s a reason. Although outwardly similar to the Ferrari FF it replaces, the GTC4Lusso represents a significant step forward. Not only is it sleeker, sharper and sportier in design, it also features new all-wheel steering technology. With a glorious Ferrari V12 up front, four-wheel drive and exhilarating rear-biased handling, the result is an all-weather grand tourer that has everything it takes to become a marque icon.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso

Why GTC4Lusso? Ferrari cites the inspiration of classic grand tourers like the 330 GTC and its sister model, the elegant 330 GT 2+2. The ‘4’ in its name refers to the seating and not the four-wheel drive transmission, while the ‘Lusso’ is self-explanatory; the interior is a delight.

Around 90% of the GTC4Lusso’s components are new, and the more you look, the more there is to love. The grille is a cleaner, more assertive design that also offers better aerodynamic and cooling performance. Down the flanks there’s a new triple-strake air vent behind the front tyre as well as a chiselled crease that visually slims the side profile. Move around to the rear and you’ll see a dramatic new square-shouldered look, with a hooded lip over classic twin Ferrari tail lights, a roof-mounted spoiler and a triple-fence diffuser. The roof has also been reworked, tapering down to a coupé-like rear, though the rear seats still offer good headroom for two adult passengers. It’s a practical proposition as a grand tourer, with good luggage space too.

Up front the passenger can delight in a new ‘dual cockpit’ architecture offering an optical display with a host of functions, so there’s no need to crane over the driver’s shoulder to see if you’re making good time. The beautifully-stitched leather of the fascia and the four generous wraparound seats make the cockpit of the GTC4Lusso a good place to spend a long journey. Separating driver and passenger is a new 10.25" HD touchscreen and the driver has a new, more compact steering wheel to grip, complete with the obligatory mannettino.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso

A front-engined Ferrari V12 is a thing of wonder and glory, and in the GTC4Lusso Maranello’s engineers have liberated 690CV (680bhp) and 697Nm of torque from the 6262cc V12. Acceleration from 0-62mph now takes just 3.4 seconds.

The joy of the new GTC4Lusso is the way it combines traditional Ferrari rear-drive handling characteristics with the security and traction of all-wheel drive. Ferrari’s patented 4RM-S system now incorporates both four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. It’s integrated with Ferrari’s Side-Slip Control 4.0 system, E-diff and the latest SCM-E electronic damper control. That’s a lot of acronyms, but you don’t need to spend weeks in a classroom understanding what they do. Just drive a GTC4Lusso all the way to the Alps, revelling in its improbable average speeds on the motorways and open roads, and then keep going into the snowline when lesser vehicles slither to a halt. You’ll understand it then. Agile, comfortable and thunderously powerful, the GTC4Lusso is a Ferrari for all seasons.
