Front-engined v12 masterpiece sets new benchmark

Ferrari claims that the new 812 Superfast is the most powerful and fastest production car it has ever made.

Even the limited-release LaFerrari only eclipses it by enlisting hybrid electric motor assistance; but whatever the semantic arguments, with 800 metric horsepower and a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds the Superfast more than lives up to its name. .

Ferrari 812 Superfast

For some, mid-engined models like the acclaimed 488 GTB are the essence of Ferrari. For others, the purity of a V12 under a long, sensuous and arcing bonnet is Maranello’s hallmark. No one car will ever settle the argument, but the 812 Superfast stakes a strong claim to be the new performance flagship of the stable. It is also achingly beautiful; lean, sculpted flanks, muscular flared wheelarches and a high, short tail balance that long, low bonnet line to perfection. There are hints of the 1969 365 GTB4 in the profile, but Ferrari has learned a lot about aerodynamics since then; the front of the 812 Superfast features active flaps in the underbody and the rear flank also features a downforce-boosting aero bypass.

The interior features a new-look centre console with floating control bridge and a central hooded binnacle for driver instrumentation. There’s also a new steering wheel sporting the familiar manettino dial as well as revised infotainment and air conditioning systems. The car is being launched in a new colour, Rosso Settanta, which celebrates the company’s 70th year.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

A front-mounted V12 is deeply engrained in the heritage of Ferrari. The one that powers the 812 Superfast is the new leader of the pack; 800 metric horsepower and 123hp per litre are remarkable figures, even by Maranello standards. The 6.5-litre V12 features a 350 bar direct injection system and F1-inspired variable geometry intake tracts; 80% of maximum torque is available from 3,500 rpm, before building to a tsunami-like 718Nm at 7,000rpm. The close-ratio double-clutch transmission delivers shorter shift times for faster acceleration and a sportier response.  0-62mph (100km/h) takes 2.9 seconds; top speed is an academic yet deeply impressive 210+mph.

The 812 Superfast benefits from experience gained with the F12 TdF, which featured Virtual Short Wheelbase software. In the 812 Superfast the technology is now in version 2.0, combining stability at speed with exceptional dynamic agility. Another first for the 812 Superfast is Electric Power Steering which integrates seamlessly with all the dynamic technologies, including Side Slip Control.

A lot of tech-speak and acronyms? The effect is simpler to describe. The 812 Superfast will thrill yet not overwhelm its fortunate owners, giving them access to the full performance of a peerless, pure, thoroughbred front-engined V12. Ferrari, we salute you.
