488 GTB

Remarkable new 488 brings V8 turbo power to Ferrari’s mid-engined heartland

It’s hard to overestimate the significance of the new 488 GTB, which succeeds the 458 as Ferrari’s standard-bearer for mid-engined V8 sports cars. Ferrari claims it delivers track-car standards of performance that can be used on road, every day.

The major change is the switch to turbo power, unleashing a thunderous 670 metric hp, but the design has undergone a radical, aero-driven makeover too.

When turbo power came to F1, suddenly the naturally-aspirated cars were fighting it out at the back of the grid. The new 3902cc V8 turbo in the 488 GTB looks like doing the same to the supercar class. Its 670 metric horsepower is around 70 more than that of the 458 Speciale, itself one of the most highly-rated sports cars of the 21st century.

But the 488 GTB is far more than a mighty new V8. An aerodynamic efficiency figure of 1.67 is a record for a production Ferrari yet delivers 50 per cent more downforce. The dramatic double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and blown rear spoiler all make their contribution, the latter generating downforce without extra drag. Onlookers will also notice the signature air intake scallop – a nod to the original 308 GTB – which is divided by a splitter. The 488 GTB stands out in side profile, those sculptural flanks combining sensuality with functionality as only Ferrari can.

In short, there’s little danger of the 488 GTB being mistaken for its predecessor, even before you get the stopwatches out. Inside the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the feeling that the cockpit is tailored around the driver. Settle into the driving seat and you’ll find the multifunctional steering wheel with manettino driving mode selector, while the graphics and interface of the infotainment system have been completely redesigned.

No one disputes that turbocharging is the way to go when it comes to both power and efficiency. But as owners of the new California T can confirm, Ferrari is only happy to go the turbo route when they can match the intuitive dialogue between car and driver of the best naturally-aspirated powertrains. Job done with the 488 GTB: response time to the accelerator is just 0.8 seconds at 2000rpm. Meanwhile 670 metric hp and 760 Nm of torque blasts the 488 GTB from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 3.0 seconds. Even more stunning is the 0-200km/h time: just 8.3 seconds and you’re travelling at 124 miles an hour. While you’re reeling in the horizon, the exhaust note is sublime – Ferrari’s engineers spent a lot of time perfecting a full, clear and distinctive note that gets better the higher you rev.

Harnessing that power, the gearbox features Variable Torque Management to distribute the torque smoothly and powerfully across the rev range, while the evolved version of the Side Slip Angle Control system, or Drift Control to you or I, is more precise, less invasive and provides greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. As well as integrating with the 488 GTB’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, SSC2 now controls the active dampers to keep the car flatter and more stable in extremis. Put all that together and you get a mid-engined V8 Ferrari that can lap the Fiorano track in just 1.23". A game changer for Ferrari. Game over for its rivals?
