The Bentley Flying Spur’s bodyshell is exceptionally strong, with a torsional stiffness of 36,500 Nm/degree, to the benefit of both handling and refinement. As with every Bentley bar the Mulsanne, the engine’s power is transmitted via an eight-speed transmission to all four wheels. In the Flying Spur, the front/rear torque split is 40:60. As a result it’s an agile and rewarding drive for such a luxurious and spacious saloon.
Bentley’s 4.0 V8 has already been acclaimed in the Continental GT V8, and it makes an equally good pairing with the Flying Spur. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine develops 500bhp (507PS) and 488 lb-ft. of torque (660Nm), powering the Flying Spur V8 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 183 mph. Variable displacement ‘switches off’ four of the engines eight cylinders under light throttle openings, but so smoothly that driver and passengers are unlikely to notice any transition. A 32-bit TriCore™ microprocessor performs up to 180 million instructions per second for precise control of combustion, delivering CO2 emissions of just 254 g/km. Of more interest to prospective owners will be the enhanced touring range of over 500 miles between fill-ups.
