Aston Martin Vanquish S

New Super GT flagship is in a class of its own – literally.

If a supercar is a no-compromise machine capable of devastating speed, and a GT is a fast, smooth and refined way to cover long distances, then the new Vanquish S is that rare creation: a super GT offering the best of both. As with the Vanquish, it features carbon-fibre body architecture and a naturally-aspirated 6.0-litre V12 engine, but Gaydon’s engineers and designers have added more power, revised styling and improved dynamics. Ideal for a relaxed high-speed tour all the way to the Nürburgring – and a blistering hot lap or two once you’ve arrived there.

To say the Vanquish S has a new carbon-fibre front splitter and rear diffuser understates the impact of both. These components give it a low, lean and menacing air, further accentuated if you choose an optional contrast graphics pack. However, the aero components do far more than create visual drama. The front splitter, for example, features tiny ‘turning vanes’ at the outer edge which reduce lift at speed. Quad exhaust pipes with bright finishers nestle within the carbon-fibre rear diffuser and the effect is completed by ten-spoke gloss black sports wheels (other designs are optionally available).

The Vanquish is a hand-built machine and individuality is a large part of its appeal. You can personalise the exterior with lightweight forged 5-spoke diamond-turned wheels, carbon-fibre bonnet louvres and a graphics pack; when it comes to the interior, the options are even more extensive. Among the choices are an all-new asymmetric Filograph quilt design on the seat accents, door cards and headlining; 2x2 twill or satin chopped carbon-fibre fascia; Alcantara, Caithness or Balmoral leather; and a One-77 steering wheel. In fact, so wide is the selection that your H.R. Owen Aston Martin dealership is by far the best place to explore it.

The existing Vanquish already develops a mighty 565bhp, but the Vanquish S ups the ante to 595bhp (603PS). A large part of the increase comes from the revised inlet manifolds, a development pioneered in the limited edition Vantage GT12. New damper internals, spring rates and anti-roll bar bushes encourage the keen driver to exploit all that extra performance (in the right circumstances, naturally). The power of the naturally-aspirated V12 is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Touchtronic III transmission, while the quad tailpipes give bystanders an aural treat as you rocket past them. A new driveline damper enhances drivability by smoothing transmission changes in slow-moving traffic and around town. It’s only a detail, but it illustrates the ‘super GT’ dual character of the Vanquish S; devastatingly fast on the open road, immensely civilised when restraint is called for.
