DB9 GT BOND EDITION

New Name and subtle refresh for the quintessential British grand tourer

Say ‘Bond movie’ and along with the martini (shaken, not stirred), the beautiful girls and the remorseless villain, you’ll probably think of Aston Martin. From the DB5 in Goldfinger to the DB10 in Spectre, the marque and the man are inseparable. So the Bond Edition DB9 GT represents a homage to all that’s best in this most British of heroes. Limited to just 150 models, it could be a collector’s car of the future. Should you put down a deposit? Well, you only live twice.

Overview

Aston Martin DB9 GT BOND EDITION

The recently-launched DB9 GT took Aston Martin’s quintessential grand tourer and brought it up to the minute with the AM II infotainment system, featuring a more user-friendly menu, better text message integration and a ‘vehicle status’ menu item. You can also now see real-time power and torque output meters as well as check tyre pressures on the move. At the same time the design was subtly tweaked to enhance those sleek, seductive lines.

The Bond Edition takes the DB9 GT as its base and adds a touch of special agent exclusivity. It’s only available in Spectre Silver, a colour unique to this model. The 20” 10-spoke gloss black wheels feature a diamond-turned finish (which presumably lasts forever), there’s a carbon-fibre front splitter and rear diffuser while dark Zircotec tailpipe finishers add a touch of covert operations stealth to the rear. Stirling silver hallmarked wing badges, previously only seen on the Centenary editions, add extra distinction and there are 007 Bond Edition exterior badges to warn off arch villains (warning: not guaranteed to work on traffic wardens).

The interior is hand-crafted in Obsidian Black leather with a full-length carbon-fibre fascia. This moody ambience is lifted by accents of Argento Grey welt and Galena Silver stitching. The seat design and headlining with its straight fluting recalls that of classic Aston Martins. The effect is restrained, impeccably tailored and timelessly elegant. Aston Martin wings are embroidered on the front headrests and there’s a Bond Edition motif on the rear console. As with Bond’s DB10 in Spectre, the steering wheel derives from the One-77 supercar and is covered in Obsidian leather with Pure Black Alcantara™ inserts. Special edition sill plaques (and a Bond Edition splash screen on the display) remind you you’re driving a highly covetable machine. If you’d like music while you drive, try playing Dame Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger on the Band & Olufsen audio system. At 1000 watts, it’s practically a secret weapon.

All 150 Bond Edition owners will receive a special handover case in blue box-grained leather with a Jacquard lining, containing a 16GB B&O USB drive and an exclusive special edition watch. As a final, thoughtful touch owners also get a Bond Edition indoor car cover.

Technology

Aston Martin DB9 GT BOND EDITION

No Q-inspired tweaks under the bonnet, but with a 0-62mph time of 4.5s, you’d hardly need any. Specification is as for the DB9 GT; all-alloy 540bhp 6.0 litre V12 driving the rear wheels via a rear-mounted six-speed transmission, carbon ceramic brake discs front and rear, and a 3-stage adaptive damping system offering normal, sport and track modes. The sports exhaust is fitted as standard, though if you prefer to travel undercover the standard one is a no-cost option. Although smooth as a Bond chat-up line, the Bond Edition DB9 GT is also stunningly fast. If Goldfinger, Drax, or Blofeld plan on giving chase, they’ll need a helicopter.
