GranCabrio Sport

Maserati’s elegant 2+2 convertible, subtly refreshed for MY18

It takes a special kind of talent to take a beautiful design and improve it. And that talent, in the case of the Maserati GranCabrio, is the design house Pininfarina. It’s an association that goes back through generations of great Maserati convertibles and coupés.

For the 2018 Model Year, Maserati has sharpened the front and rear, added the latest infotainment and dropped the 4.2-litre V8 from the model line-up in favour of the 4.7 across the range.

Maserati GranCabrio Sport

The GranCabrio Sport is one of the few convertibles that looks brilliant whether the hood is up or down. But hood down wins, if only because you then get to feast your eyes on the hand-crafted Poltrona Frau leather upholstery and redesigned dashboard with its V-shaped point at the centre. Seatbelt mounts lie flush within the beltline of the body to leave those sweeping lines uninterrupted, and the triple-layer soft top with its thermal glass rear screen stows away unobtrusively behind the rear seats.

From the front, your eyes are drawn to the new ‘sharknose’ octagonal grille and large air vents that flank it. There’s a new, aerodynamic front splitter for improved airflow and downforce and the Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED running lights are fitted with Adaptive Light Control, swivelling the headlights as you turn. At the rear, the valance and exhaust are also subtly updated.

Inside, the high-resolution 8.4’’ Maserati Touch Control Plus unit (MTC+) allows simple and intuitive control of audio, navigation and comfort functions. There is also a user-friendly rotary controller in the central console and the system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphones.  The Harman Kardon audio system features 11 audiophile-quality speakers and a 12-channel 900-Watt amp.

Interior Tour

Maserati GranCabrio Sport

Maserati’s 4.7-litre V8 remains resolutely old-school in the best possible way. It’s naturally aspirated, which delivers a glorious, unfettered roar all the way up to the 7500rpm red line. It develops a healthy 460hp and 520Nm of torque and delivers 0-62mph in 5.0seconds. The compact, light V8 is mounted low and well back from the front axle line for excellent weight distribution and puts its power down via a six-speed ZF transmission, which offers five different operating modes. The Maserati Stability Program (MSP) uses an array of sensors to constantly monitor driving status and deploys a host of safety and performance systems to maintain handling and grip, without intervening too early to spoil the driver’s fun.
