GranCabrio MC

Maserati’s punchiest convertible gets a sharp new look for MY2018

For the 2018 model year, Maserati has sharpened up its stable of grand tourers and revised the line-up. You can now choose between coupé GranTurismo and convertible GranCabrio, with the further option of Sport (fast) and MC (very fast).

So the new GranCabrio MC is a very fast, very beautiful new convertible in the great Maserati tradition. Sound like your sort of thing? Read on.

Maserati GranCabrio MC

The timeless lines of Pininfarina’s GranCabrio MC can still turn heads from half a mile away, so Maserati’s 2018 updates have sensibly just sharpened the edges a little. The new sharknose grille, large air intakes, Bi-Xenon headlamps and unique carbon splitter give the face a more aggressive look, perfectly complemented by the Trident badge in the centre of the grille. To accentuate the track-honed vibe, there’s also an optional carbon-fibre bonnet that’s inspired by the MC Trofeo race cars that features a distinctive central air intake and two side vents.

At the rear there’s a new bumper, a high, centrally positioned exhaust and a boot-mounted spoiler that carries a third brake light. The GranCabrio MC can also be distinguished from its Sport stablemate by its 20" MC Design alloy wheels.

In the cockpit, MC owners get sports seats in Poltrona Frau leather, a three-spoke sport steering wheel and longer Trofeo design gearshift paddles, which are available in carbon fibre as an option. Pedals are in perforated aluminium and all four integrated headrests features an embroidered Maserati Trident.  Infotainment is all-new for the 2018 models, with a high-resolution 8.4’’ Maserati Touch Control Plus unit (MTC+) for simple and intuitive control of audio, navigation and comfort functions. There is also a user-friendly rotary controller in the central console and the system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphones.  The Harman Kardon audio system features 11 audiophile-quality speakers and a 12-channel 900-Watt amp.

Maserati GranCabrio MC

The GranCabrio MC is powered by Maserati’s naturally-aspirated 4.7-litre V8, developing 460hp at 7,000rpm and 520Nm of peak torque at 4,750rpm. The 0-62mph sprint takes just 4.9 seconds and top speed is 180 miles an hour (with the hood up, we recommend). The compact, light V8 is mounted low and well back from the front axle line for excellent weight distribution and puts its power down via a six-speed ZF transmission, which offers five different operating modes. You can leave it in Auto-Normal for cruising along the Promenade des Anglais, then switch to Manual-Sport for a blast up the Alpes Maritimes, enjoying the blip of the throttle as it matches revs on the downshift. With the hood down, that’s an aural treat that will even persuade you to switch off the Harman Kardon audio system for a while.
