LaFerrari Aperta

Yields nothing to the coupé in performance, gains everything in open-top appeal.

Like a rock and roll supergroup, Ferrari knows the value of an encore. The original LaFerrari coupé was sold out from the moment the first styling bucks were previewed to carefully-selected owners. Once it was launched, car magazines lined up to acclaim its extraordinary 950bhp powertrain, F1-bred aerodynamics and instinctive handling. Now here’s the LaFerrari Aperta; its close sibling and a match in every respect, with the additional appeal of an open top.

Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

The LaFerrari Aperta has more in common with an open-cockpit LMP1 car than some soft boulevard cruiser. Ferrari accepted no compromise in straight-line performance or chassis stiffness; the Aperta has the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness characteristics as its coupé stablemate. It has the same aerodynamic performance, too, despite the many challenges in achieving this with the open configuration.

Visually the most striking differences include a pair of rear buttresses and a roll-over hoop, described by Ferrari as a carbon-fibre flying bridge. Yet almost every aspect of the structure has been subtly modified; the butterfly doors open at a slightly different angle and there are changes to the geometry of the flanks and wheelarches, with an additional carbon-fibre vent ahead of the doors.

Even without the roof in place, LaFerrari Aperta has the same drag coefficient as the coupé, a remarkable achievement for a convertible of such high performance. Even the radiator angles were changed to direct more air flow beneath the body and not over the screen, so that no hot air reaches the occupants. The Aperta comes with a soft-top, though an optional carbon-fibre hardtop is available.

The 6,262cc naturally-aspirated V12 is the most powerful ever fitted to a production Ferrari, and combined with an F1-derived HY-KERS hybrid electric motor develops an astonishing 950bhp. The two units complement each other; the advantage of electric power is that maximum torque is instantly available – so 0-100km/k (62mph) comes up in less than 3 seconds, and 0-200 km/h takes under 7 seconds. Top speed is 217mph, a speed last approached in an open-top Ferrari by Amon and Bandini, who won the 1967 Monza 1000km in the legendary 330 P4.

Ferrari algorithms ensure that the maximum power of the hybrid powertrain is always available and precisely controllable; for example, the V12’s revs stay high under cornering for better acceleration on the exit.

This being a Ferrari, there’s no suggestion of a whisper-quiet EV mode – the exhaust is tuned for full, harmonious sound, all the better enjoyed in open-top mode.

Like LaFerrari, the LaFerrari Aperta will be produced as a limited run of very, special cars. Those privileged enough to own one are in for the drive of a lifetime.
