California T

Maranello's sensational new hardtop convertible displays a meaner, leaner side

The California T’s folding hardtop, inviting cockpit and sensuous lines combine sports car appeal with a generous measure of practicality. But now there’s a new turbocharged V8 under the bonnet it offers genuine supercar performance too, especially with the new Handling Speciale option. It could be a game-changer.

Overview

Ferrari California T

In design terms the California T shares dimensions with its predecessor but little else. The lines are more sculpted, chiselled and assertive. The flanks echo the legendary 250 Testa Rossa ‘pontoon’ front wing. And the aggressive, gaping front grille and stacked projector headlamps underscore the message that this is a serious performance machine. Meanwhile a triple-fence rear diffuser helps to keep the California T on track as it approaches its top speed, which is 316 km/h, or around 196 mph.

Settle into the driver’s seat and you’ll note the high-resolution 6.5" screen featuring both touch-screen and conventional controls. The cockpit is trimmed in opulent Frau semi-aniline leather, while the opening between cockpit and boot adds a further touch of practicality. You could cruise down the Promenade des Anglais in your California T, enjoying the admiring looks, en route to a full-blooded track session at Paul Ricard circuit later in the day.

If you prefer the track to the boulevard, the Handling Speciale option offers a tauter, more driver-focused experience. This option is distinguished by a new front grille in matte Grigio Ferro Met and a rear diffuser in the same colour with matte black fences and matte black tailpipes. Inside the cockpit, a special plaque indicates that the car has the HS package.

Technology

Ferrari California T

A turbo? In a road-going Ferrari? Yes, and it’s a peach. Ferrari has shared know-how from the F1 team, using compact, very low inertia twin-scroll turbines to ensure ultra-sharp throttle response. Ferrari being Ferrari, they weren’t going to be content with a turbo engine ‘whoosh’ instead of the soulful howl that their customers demand. The 3855 cc turbo 8-cylinder is mounted low in the chassis in a mid-front position and delivers 560 metric horsepower at 7500 rpm with a glorious, flat-plane V8 snarl that just gets more spine-tingling as the revs rise. 0-62mph races past in a mere 3.6 seconds, and the driver also enjoys the benefit of a new steering box and suspension set up for sharper, more precise handling with no loss of ride quality.

Choose the new HS package and your California T will feature different damper settings and modified springs, so the ride is firmer. The benefit is greater body control under spirited driving with less roll, dive and pitch. When the mannetino is set to Sport, the HS software also modifies the gear-shift logic for faster shifts both up and down the box. It also reprograms the dampers to increase their speed of response and efficiency, with revised F1-Trac logic to improve acceleration on bumpy surfaces.

The California T Handling Speciale even features a complete new exhaust system. Developed in tandem with the engine and gearbox control programming, it delivers a richer, sportier sound from tickover through to the red line.

With superb levels of performance, blistering pick-up and the most exhilarating soundtrack any turbo has ever yielded, the new California T makes a great case for turbocharged power, with or without the HS option. Compared with its predecessor, the new Ferrari has 49% more torque yet consumes 15% less fuel. That’s progress.
