New Bentley Continental GT

Bentley’s all-new grand tourer redefines the category.

The all-new Bentley Continental GT replaces a car that has defined a category for 14 years. Nothing covers the grand tourer’s range of abilities better than a Continental GT; every generation has been effortlessly fast, rewarding to drive and beautifully crafted.

No pressure, then. With a bold new design, extraordinary levels of agility from a technology-packed active chassis and a new 626bhp W12 engine to propel it, the new Continental GT takes on the leader’s mantle with imperious ease.

Overview

New Continental GT

We’ll start with the looks, because that’s what will stop passers-by in their tracks as soon as the first Continental GT arrives in our showroom. Under the direction of director Stefan Sielaff, Bentley’s design team has taken all the visual cues from the previous Continental and added a touch of swaggering sensuality, with hints of the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car. The signature matrix grille is now more pronounced, the nose lower and bonnet extended to be more expressive of the power beneath; meanwhile the side profile is more curvaceous and the rear haunch more muscular than ever. The entire side pressing of the new Continental GT is now sharply defined in Super Formed aluminium, the first production car in the world to feature such a large Super Formed panel.

The twin headlamps are there, but now feature a new diamond facet design that was apparently inspired by hand-cut crystal. The Bentley’s all-new platform has also given the design team freedom to emphasise the ‘prestige mass’ by increasing the length between the base of the windscreen and the centreline of the front wheel. At the rear, the taillights are now ellipses, echoing the shape of the exhaust finishers beneath. Overall, it’s still recognisably a Continental GT, but more emotive in the visual messages it sends.

Inside the team has maintained the same high level – there are beautiful touches of craftsmanship everywhere, like the Côtes de Geneve knurling on the centre console, the diamond-in-diamond quilted upholstery and the sweep of flawless veneer that runs the full width of the dashboard. For the first time on a Bentley, the driver’s information panel is now fully-digital, with digital chrome bezels that shine and reflect exactly as traditional dials would.

But wait – where’s the obligatory retina-quality digital display? Fire up the deep bass of the W12 and with delicious synchronicity a veneered panel shifts back, then rotates to reveal a three-sided display, one of the sides being a 12.3" screen. Alternatively, choose the third of the display sides and you’ll enjoy three old-school analogue dials to remind you of Bentley’s long heritage as the king of grand tourers.

Technology

New Continental GT

An all-new platform and a 48-Volt active anti-roll system gives the Continental GT a level of agility greater than that of any Bentley before it. Active torque vectoring (originally introduced on the GT3-R) applies the brakes on individual wheels to improve the Bentley’s entry and exit from corners and the new model’s all-wheel drive system no longer applies a fixed 40:60 front-rear ratio, instead favouring rear-drive whenever possible for efficiency and a more rewarding driver experience.

Like the previous W12 models before it, the new Continental GT features a 6.0-litre W12 engine. But this time it’s based on the more powerful, more efficient direct-injection unit from the Bentayga, producing 626bhp and 900Nm of torque; that’s 7% more power and a full 25% more torque than in the previous Continental GT W12. In the lighter, lower and leaner Continental GT the result is a 0-60mph time of just 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 207mph. Start-stop technology and variable displacement (that cuts from 12 to six cylinders when coasting or cruising) increases the range between fill-ups, while the Active Engine Mount ensure that any transitions are literally imperceptible. A new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission offers both lightning-fast shifts and smooth, seamless transitions between ratios. It adds up to a Bentley that is both searingly fast and effortlessly refined; the mark of a definitive new grand tourer.
